Five suites on a cliff above the Sundays River, in malaria-free Big Five country.
When I want guests to see the Big Five without giving up a single comfort, Esiweni is where I bring them.
There are only five suites, so there are never more than ten guests, and on some mornings you may be the only ones there. Sophie and Ludovic, the French couple who own it, have made it the only Relais & Châteaux in KwaZulu-Natal, and the kitchen is as good a reason to come as the game.

Esiweni stands high on a cliff in the Nambiti Private Game Reserve, looking down on the Sundays River as it winds through the valley. Each of the five suites stands on its own along the edge, with a private terrace over the river and the reserve.
The building is contemporary, made with local materials and local craftsmanship, and the whole lodge runs on the sun: it is entirely solar-powered and off the grid. In 2025 it was awarded Two Michelin Keys.

Sophie and Ludovic brought the French art of living with them. The cooking brings France and South Africa to the same table, and it is ranked among the Top 100 Restaurants in South Africa.
Meals are part of the stay. Some are served on the deck, some in the boma by the fire, and now and then lunch appears in the bush, or an aperitif out on the savanna as the light goes.
Every suite is detached and named for the animals of the reserve: Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo, Lion. Each has its own terrace and the valley in the window.
Suites of up to 150 square metres.
Heated floors, and a deep bath that looks out over the valley.
A terrace of your own for breakfast, a book, or the view.

Nambiti is a malaria-free Big Five reserve, small enough that your drives are spent watching rather than searching. Beyond lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo, there are cheetah, black rhino, hippo, giraffe and hyena, more than 40 mammal species and over 280 kinds of bird. The animals keep their own diary, but the odds here are good.
Two a day, morning and afternoon, with a ranger who knows the reserve.
More than 280 species. Bring binoculars.
On the cliff edge, looking straight down the valley.
A massage with the reserve laid out below you.
Lift off at first light and drift over the reserve and the river, weather permitting.
A shaded daybed on the deck, and the valley below.
